Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone this artwork is a replica of an actual fragment. It preserves all of the details of the original and I have made it look as close as possible to it. It is mounted on a removable, felt based stand.

Fortunately enough of the details survive to reveal a snapshot of intimate royal life from the perspective of two princesses in the early years of Akhenaten’s reign.

This is a very rare replica fragment of king Akhenaten’s daughters.

It is an absolutely charming depiction of sisterly love and care and is a very special moment in Egyptian art. Once part of a wall, It could so easily have fallen in a way that totally erased the scene entirely but even in it’s battered state enough of the design speaks to us.

The elder sister, defined by height and sidelock of hair, gently drapes her arm over the shoulder of her younger, bald sibling.

Both daughters have already received ear piercings and large discs are present covering the ear region. These would likely have been gold discs in real life, either embossed or inlaid with floral patterns.

Only a trace of reddish flesh colour has been given to the face and limbs which gives this light ochre coloured fragment a hint of contrast and yet more interest.

Many fragments of relief carvings from the period of Ahkenaten and Nefertiti retain portions of their original colour due to reuse of blocks in later times as filler in temples and state buildings.

Akhenaten and Nefertiti had 6 daughters in total so it is difficult to decide who is depicted here without the presence of hieroglyphs.

The eldest daughter was Meritaten and it could be a representation of her in a protective pose with the younger Ankhesenpaaten who would later change her name to Ankhesenamun and become the wife of Tutankhamun.
