Background information

The name Persepolis translates to Persian city and indeed it was the jewel of the Achaemenid empire. The greatest portion of work at the site was undertaken by Darius the Great - 550-486 B.C.E.
A complex mesh of temples, palaces and associated structures were built as the ceremonial captial of the vast Persian empire.
The Apadana - the main audience hall was a vast building of extraordinary opulence. Terraces, carved ramps, exotic oak fittings and iconic double bull pillar capitals.

Even in it's ruined state as excavated in the 1930's it revealed well preserved sculptural remains below the sand.
This fragment was one of the loose fragments retrieved by the French archaeologists that depicts one of the 'immortals' which were the elite guards and soldiers of Darius.
