Background information
Lamashtu - a deity of the Assyrian and Babylonian cultures she was a malevolent force.
In the realm of the gods, Lamashtu was the bitter rival of Pazuzu , the king of demons and she would pose a threat to mothers and childbirth and the general health of the mortal population. Having a Lamashtu amulet or statue would be used to neutralize the potential threat for the owner of the amulet driving her and any other evil spirits away.
This particular amulet is a Neo-Assyrian variation that shows Lamashtu with a hairy body, feline head and donkey ears. She stands on a reed boat holding a spindle in her left hand and a comb in her right.
The reverse inscription reads : 'Lamashtu, daughter of An, chosen by the gods, lady, most noble of ladies'
