Each of these three scarabs have beneficial hieroglyphic inscriptions.

The large scarab -

Dimensions - Length - 9cm - 3-1/4 inches

Width - 6-1/2 cm - 2-3/4 inches

Height - 3 cm / 1-1/4 inches

This finely shaped scarab has underneath, a typical middle kingdom scroll work design surrounding three hieroglyphs. At the top is Ra the sun god represented as a disc , the Nefer sign in the middle (that which is good) and the ankh at the bottom - a symbol of life and fertility.

The medium sized scarab -

Dimensions - Length - 6. 7 cm / 2-1/2 inches

This scarab replica has fine lines on the outer wing casing and inscriptions on bottom featuring the eye of Horus and the symbol for gold - ‘nub’.

The small scarab has a slightly elongated form and an inscription on the bottom featuring the sun disc of Ra flanked by two Uraeus cobras.

Length - 4.2 cm / 1-3/4 inches approx.

A lovely set that will make for great foreground display in your Egyptian collection. A good way to demonstrate the manifold variations of scarab styles.

Background information

This association of the scarab as a symbol of renewal came to the Egyptians quite early in history as they observed the scarab breaking up animal dung and forming a spectacular perfect orb that was usually larger than the beetle itself.

The scarab would then begin rolling it along the ground to place it in it's burrow and lay eggs within it. To the Egyptians it was like the globe of the sun in miniature travelling across the ground instead of the sky, thus the scarab became connected with the solar god.

The fact that the ball of dung would eventually burst with new scarabs gave it an extra push into the ancient consciousness that this powerful little creature was indeed a symbol of rebirth.

In my teenage years while building my own Egyptian kingdoms on my grandparents remote farm, I used to watch these creatures in action, and they used to work in packs until the job of breaking up a cow patty was done. They were an introduced species to the Australian outback in the 1950's and a pocket of them luckily survived on our farm.
