As with all Egyptian deities and magical creatures in the animal kingdom, intense observations of their natural habits were noted before entering the pantheon. The most remarkable were deified or at least immortalized with a magical amulet. Sharing some similar traits with the more ubiquitous Egyptian scarab beetle, the hedgehog has some significant other points of interest.
The hedgehog was observed to be resilient on the desert fringes as an effective warrior against snakes and scorpions which were a threat to all strata of Egyptian society. Even when it was bitten it was noticed how it was able to recover more often than not thus an association with medicine was formed.
Hibernation periods and the eventual reanimation of the hedgehog, was seen as a symbol of regeneration linking in with resurrection in the afterlife and the daily rise and fall of the sun.
As a protector against scorpions, snakes and mythological demons, the hedgehog was a potent choice for the ancient Egyptian. The spikes of the hedgehog a superior shield to be admired and a tenacious personality gave it credence.
Remarkable evidence from the old kingdom shows that hedgehogs or large amulets were tied to the bow of ships as a symbol of protection for the voyage. Curiously they faced inwards towards the crew and not straight ahead.
Certainly one of the most adorable of Egypt's many amulets.
