On offer here is a striking relief sculpture replica of one of the world's first statesman. Eannatum, the king of Lagash. In addition an early Sumerian cuneiform tablet has been included showing the early stage of development of this iconic writing style which is also present on the relief carving.
When cities were a relatively new concept king Eannatum took the path of creating an empire as he conquered the famed cities of Elam, Ur, Uruk and Kish thus consolidating all the land and becoming the king of all Sumer.
The benefits of consolidation were felt in the opening of unrestricted trade routes which brought security, wealth and ingenuity to the early cities. Writing and language were shared and expanded upon as local traits were absorbed into the evolving script.
The piece on offer is a life size replica of a famous votive fragment and is mounted on a polished felt based stand. Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone the piece has an aged ochre / slate patina and is signed and dated.
