This large cylinder seal and impression replica set originates from the Persian, Achaemenid period 550 - 330 B.C.E. It shows the familiar theme of the 'master of the animals' which was another way of showing mastery over the natural elements that could contribute to chaos in the early civilisations. Here the figures are a hybrid of a lion's body, the head of a human enemy and the horns of an ibex.
The masters in the earliest examples of this composition style were shown to be deities or great heroes such as Gilgamesh, but here it is the Persian king himself who takes on the role of protector and master.
On the far right, the tree of life, a stylized date palm underscores stability and fertility in the realm while the winged sun disc of Ahura Mazda presides over the entire scene in the upper register.
The impression can be easily removed from the felt based stand and the cylinder can be used for demonstration purposes.
