This piece has some intricate details for an Egyptian statue of this size and composition. The seated statue type was a favoured format for the ancient Egyptian noble or royal person from old kingdom times onwards. It was used to preserve a memory of a married couple in the prime of their life wearing their finest garments and sitting on their best chairs. The details are incised with great care and attention and it is quite simply, a small masterpiece. Sadly the identity of this couple is lost to history as no hireoglyphs are present.
From Pharaohs to nobility and anyone capable of making a sculpture of their own, would enjoy the benefits of having a statue to preserve an image of themselves. This was important for eternal prosperity in the next world. A type of insurance in the possible case their mummy was destroyed their spirit would inhabit the statue.
This Egyptian couple is certainly dressed for eternity in their finest pleated linen garments that were so popular in the late 18th dynasty. This style was to become even more pronounced in the early 19th dynasty when it was the very essence of high fashion.
They are seated on two low chairs, both with distinctive styling and probably represented their own actual chairs which were in themselves, a highly valuable commodity. To own a chair, to lift you off the ground, was a major status symbol.
