From the vault comes this signed 2019 edition of one of my most complex bas relief carvings. The replica fragment has realistic aged effects with aged coloration and many hand painted details. A removable felt based stand is included and offers a fine display option.
The photos are taken under a simple lamp light which is the best way to make a bas relief carving jump to life.
Background information about the design
This tender scene features the most famous Pharaoh hunting ducks in the marshes of the Nile with his Queen supporting his campaign. The scene originates from one of the shrines discovered in his tomb and was a raised relief carving coated in thick gold leaf. I have always loved this scene and wished it to be seen without the overwhelming distraction of the overlaid gold so that the sculpture and design was the focus. And what a design it is. It is filled with intrinsic detail capturing a behind the scenes look at a Pharaohs' leisure time. The inclusion of his pet lion is another special feature and perhaps they were hunting for his food and not their own.
The fashions of this period are quite elaborate and certainly a bit excessive for hunting by the river. Pleated garments with tassels, corsets, diadems, armlets, sandals and elaborate collars are nothing short of opulent. Seated on a cushioned chair with Hathorian cow pattern Tutankhamun stretches his bow while Ankh-es-en-amun offers a replacement arrow while pointing at an unseen target. She is also seated in comfort on a pillow. There is some evidence to suggest Tutankhamun walked with a cane so the use of a chair during a patient hunt is not without reason.
