On offer here is a scale replica of a Roman wine ship sculpture that was unearthed in what was ancient Germania. The original sculpture was comissioned as part of a grave monument for a wealthy Roman wine merchant who plied the river cargo trade route where the Mozelle joins with the Rhine river. This was the service route that connected ancient Gaul and Germania within the Roman Empire.
The sculpture clearly shows several barrels of wine with a lively crew seated on either side of the central row. A lattice weave appears on the protective deck railings and a pair of imposing dragon figure heads usually reserved for war ships, add personality to the sculpture. Found toppled onto it's side, one side has the marks of erosion but the overall form remains intact.
