Aztec / Mayan Calendar
Dimensions - Diameter - 6 cm / 2 - 1/4 inches
Depth - 0.7 mm - 1/4 inch
This is the most famous artwork of all Aztec and Mayan artifacts that has yet presented itself to the modern world. On offer here is a scaled down replica of the original calendar stone that is said to predict the end of the world in December 2012. Superbly detailed it makes a fine feature necklace threaded on a strand of plaited leather with silver clasps.
The very large original sculpture stood on the platform of the great pyramid of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan. The various symbols depictied in this highly detailed artifact show the days of the Aztec year. The fearsome central image represents the end of the world which could be open to interpretation as representing a massive earthquake.
Made of a strong composition stone with no resins or plastics. I have aged this piece with an ochre patina which has been given a light polish to accentuate details and create highlights.
