Akhenaten relief fragment
Dimensions - Height - 13cm / 5-1/4 inches
Width - 11 cm / 4-1/4 inches
Depth - 3 cm / 1-1/4 inches
On offer here is one of the most iconic images of the Pharaoh Akhenaten that has been handed down to us from antiquity. Possibly the most famous individual relief carving of the king showing the experimental approach used when depicting his face during the early years of his reign.
Often quoted as being a borderline caricature, this style of carving was a brave departure from the traditional restraint and perfectionism of Egyptian portraiture up until this point.
The huge lips, pointed jaw and long neck find another 3 dimensional voice in the well known colossal statues of his Karnak temple complex known as the Gem-pa-aten.
For those of you who are just learning about this extraordinary period of Egyptian history, and those of you who are very familiar with this image, it is one you will never forget.
I remember the room I was in, turning the pages of a history book at school and being quite confronted by this image for the first time. I knew it was Egyptian of course, but what a strange and unusual face. Little did I know that this was just the beginning of an appreciation for the enigmatic 'Amarna' period.
Made of a strong composition stone this fragment has a light ochre colouration with a realistic patina.
