Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone it has a sturdy wire loop on the back to enable a wall display option. It has an aged earthy slate black patina.
This is a replica of the most famous artwork of all Aztec and Mayan artifacts that has yet presented itself to the modern world. On offer here is a scaled down replica of the original calendar stone that was said to predict the end of the world in December 2012.
This piece was found in the archive along with some other Aztec pieces this week.
Thankfully the great cataclysm didn't happen and what we are left with is an increased awareness of a culture that invested greatly in the early forms of astronomy. The observations of planetary alignments and other celestial bodies influenced a cultural cycle measured in hundreds and thousands of years.
It is interesting to note that a within 2 weeks after the end cylcle of this calender, the giant asteroid known as 'Apophis' passed very close to Earth orbit. This rock has the notoriety of being the most threatening of the known asteroids that could collide with Earth.
The very large original calendar sculpture stood on a major platform of the great pyramid of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan. The various symbols depictied in this highly detailed artifact show the days of the Aztec year. The fearsome central image represents the end of the cycle which could be open to interpretation as representing a massive earthquake.
