On offer here for the very first time is a special replica that depicts the fourth king of Egypt's first dynasty. One of the most famous images to have survived from the first dynasty it shows the King Den smiting an Asiatic foe, grabbing him by the hair with mace ready to strike. His name appears in a serekh, which is a forerunner to the well known cartouche. The Horus falcon presides over this shrine like house of the King's name.
This small panel is inscribed with early, formative hieroglyphs, and is actually a docket or label that would have been tied to a box that held the King's sandals. It was placed in his tomb where the original was found in the 'Umm el Qaab' (mother of pots) region of Abydos. A small hole pierces the upper right hand corner to allow for this attachment.
On the back can be seen an inscribed pair of sandals to make sure their was no mistaking the contents of the box.
Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone this replica is aged to take on the look of the original panel with hand painted details.
Background information
King Den is the most well documented king of the first dynasty and was a progressive figure that left his mark on Egyptian culture that transcended the ages.
Great technological advancements were undertaken as Egypt grew as a nation. The development of substantial royal tombs started with Den. The use of pink & black Aswan granite was used within his tomb which was the first time this incredibly hard stone was used as a building material.
Most importantly he was the first king to use the term 'King of upper and lower Egypt'.
Mentioned on another docket found in the tomb, a certain individual know as Hemaka who was very close to the king and was responsible for getting the labels in order. Hemaka was the chief sandel bearer of the King which was an illustrious title to have and Hemaka was rewarded with a substantial tomb of his own.
