Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone with an aged blue / green patina.
On offer here is a large Bes amulet replica from the 26th dynasty. It has a bronze ring for suspension to be found in the highest of the ostrich plumes he wears on his head. It has a combination of incised details and an almost abstract, sculptural quality to describe the nature of the deity.
The exposed tongue, a feature of most Bes statues, hints at his provocative nature.
Conceived to be a wild, yet jolly deity, he would drive away the evil spirits or bad energy from the household.
Especially associated with childbirth, little people were often employed to take on his persona dressed in full regalia and banging a tambourine during the moment of birth.
