On offer here are a replica pair of ancient
cuneiform tablets. Original tablets were incised in moist clay, then fired or left to harden in the sun.
Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone, They have an aged patinas with a light polish.
The writing that appears on the square tablet is one of the very earliest cuneiform incriptions. This is an exact replica of an early Sumerian pictogram text associated with land ownerhip. This was the type of writing used in the proto-urban period of Mesopotamia - near the end of the 4th millenium B.C.E.
Fast forward a few centuries more and the emerging cuneiform script had evolved into the example seen on the disc.
The circular disc has very precise characters of text which suggests it was made in a royal workshop. This is a much more complex and ordered use of ancient writing of a type used in later Sumerian culture as well as Babylonian and Assyrian. A likely translation for this rare object would be a temple foundation prayer or a document of it's dedication ritual.
