Tyet / Tjet amulet of Isis
Dimensions -
Height - 11.5 cm / 4-1/2 inches
Width - 5 cm / 2 inches
Available here, is a replica of my year 2012 amulet which features the intriguing form of the tyet or tjet knot of Isis. This was an amulet held or worn by the devotee to invoke supreme protection 'by the blood of Isis'.
Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone it has been hand painted in traditional late 18th dynasty colours. Front and back are shown in the photographs and reveal a well aged replica which has been given a light polish.
Background information -
The shape of the amulet is said to represent a piece of cloth, looped and knotted, thus creating the girdle of Isis.
It has strong associations as a fertility symbol and was one of several important amulets used by pregnant women to ward off pain and protect the child in the womb.
Men could also wear or hold the amulet to invoke the protection of the much loved Goddess. Examples have been found dating to the 18th dynasty that provide the earliest evidence for this.
