Centaur
Diameter of largest amulet - 7.5 cm / 3 inches
* Combined postage offered if you would like to add other pieces to your parcel.
On offer here are a pair of amulets featuring the mythical Centaur and the Demi-god Triptolemus Of ancient Greek mythology.
Triptolemus, under the tutelage of Demeter brought agriculture to mankind and is depicted in this small, but highly detailed amulet. Riding in a chariot / cart being drawn by serpents he extends his hand with a cornucopia of abundance.
The Centaur is one of the most strange, if somewhat elegant of the figures composed in ancient times. They had the head, arms and torso of a man but the legs and lower half of a horse. They lived in Thessaly, fed on meat and were prone to riotous behavior.
They were often depicted as drunken followers of Dionysis with one exceptional Centaur known as the wise Chiron. He was a tutor / personal trainer to several heroes including Hercules.
The amulet on offer shows a Centaur wrestling a serpent and the figure has fine muscle tone. Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone, it has an aged ochre patina giving it a freshly excavated look.
