This is a unique version of my 2011 Djed pillar design which was my first in over a decade. This time it is a ceremonial size that is designed to fit comfortably in the hand. Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone it has some nice details on both sides and features a traditional Egyptian colour palette when depicting a coloured Djed.
The Djed pillar is the principal amulet of Osiris and was said to invoke strength and stability in the life of the owner. A common amulet used during the preparation of a wrapped mummy with various versions of the Djed pillar hidden in the wrapping to aid in the revivification of the body in the next world.
In addition the very tomb walls or columns could be decorated solely with Djed images. The tombs of Nefertari and King Seti the 1st come to mind in this regard.
The ultimate goal for an ancient Egyptian afterlife was to be at one with Osiris in the gardens of paradise for eternity.
