For the collector, here in an exclusive format, a rare replica Egyptian relief inlay featuring the profile of Pharaoh Akhenaten.

This type of carving was made to be inserted into a hollow recess in a wall as part of a larger composition. This technique was very popular during the reign of Akhenaten and Nefertiti and it is somewhat like an elaborate jigsaw puzzle made of different coloured stones individually carved to create the whole image.

The crown would have been made of coloured blue glass or lapis and placed above this flesh coloured fragment on a wall scene. This technique remained popular well into the following 19th dynasty.

The image of the king has soft features which suggests it was created mid to late reign as the revolutionary and striking early representations were replaced with a more restrained style. Compare the other Akhenaten fragment that is currently in store as of writing this. The contrast is stark, but demonstrates the progress of the style. The very last works of the Amarna period including the 'post' Amarna period are softer still and can be seen to perfection in the Amarna princess with sidelock and the Tutankhamun coronation statue. (Returning soon) Both exemplify the ultimate in post Amarna 'cherub-esque' style. That is how I describe it when showing people new to the subject, the immense nuances of Egyptian facial representation.

Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone it has a well developed aged ochre patina and is mounted on a stand offering a striking display effect.
