Tutankhamun coronation statue fragment.

Dimensions - Height - 20.3 cm / 8 inches

Stand length - 24.8 cm / 9-3/4 inches

Stand width - 12.2 cm - 4-3/4 inches

This beautiful fragment of the very young Tutankhamun is made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone that has an aged patina. No resins are used in this or any of the other works in the store as it is a more naturalistic look I prefer and offer. It is mounted on a removable polished felt based stand with little ridges left on the support poles to offer extra stability.

This is a replica of the original fragment and attention to detail in colour and texture allow for the display options as a standalone feature piece. Alternatively, it can blend well into a larger collection and is an interesting sculpture from every angle. It invokes the wonder of what is actually missing and how he would have looked with his nose intact or the figure of the god Amun pressing his crown down upon him.

I have used simple desk lamps in the photos with warm lighting to show the sculptural details and a few shots have slightly different light to show the actual colour. No filters are ever used in store photos.

Background information

The unmistakable features of the boy king Tutankhamun radiate from this fragment like ruined perfection.

This fantastic piece represents the remains of Tutankhamun's coronation statue which would have shown a much larger figure of the god Amun placing the Khepresh crown upon his head as is evident by the remains of a hand on the back of the crown. Amun would have been seated with the smaller figure of the king standing before him with hands by his side.

More than one coronation statue was made for this king, and they were positioned in principal temples along the Nile as a message that Egypt was once more the domain of the god Amun. Amun and the majority of the Egyptian pantheon of gods were replaced by the sun god Aten during the reign of Akhenaten, Tutankhamun's father. All of the traditional temples were closed, and statues of the gods removed, smashed or hidden until the reign of Tutankhamun when the former religion was reactivated.

Much restoration was needed, and many new statues had to be made to replace that which was lost. This is why we are so lucky to admire many surviving statues of Tutankhamun who had quite a short reign.

This fragment represents one of the first made for the king and it clearly shows the kings extreme youth with an almost cherub style of face.

The artists of Amarna adapted their skill to create one of the most beautiful and sensitive depictions of the king to survive. Even with the damage that was suffered through the passage of time this is clearly a masterpiece of Egyptian sculpture.
