On offer here is a fine replica relief carving of the god Khnum. Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone, it has some finely painted details enlivening the contours of the carving with subtle colouration.
Mounted on a removable felt based stand, it will benefit from direct lamp or sunlight to create the shadow play intended for bas relief carvings such as this.
One of the most ancient of Egyptian gods, Khnum was a principal creator deity. He was credited in the earliest times as being the source of the Nile and responsible for the annual Nile flood.
This flood brought with it the rich silt that allowed Egypt to become the powerhouse agricultural nation of the ancient world.
This silt was also seen as important for the manufacture of clay vessels and it's association with Khnum would be a key feature of his iconography.
In his most iconic representations, he is seated at a potters wheel fashioning human kind out of clay.
It is not a coincidence that biblical descriptions of man's birth included clay in some interpretations perhaps being inspired by the descriptive walls and parchments of ancient Egypt.
The representation on offer shows Khnum with a ram's head surmounted by a large Atef crown. A tripartite wig disguises the join of the animal aspects with the human creating a harmonious design.
