Amenhotep III & Tiye
18th dynasty King and Queen
Dimensions :-
Total height including stand - 7.5 cm / 3 inches
Base 6.5 x 5 cm / 2-1/2 x 2 inches
On offer here for the first time is a little gem of a statue, well, a pair of statues actually featuring the inimitable Queen Tiye and her husband the King Amenhotep III.
Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone the statues have a well developed aged ochre patina.
This replica statue pair would have to be the most petite of all the many representations known for this power couple of ancient Egypt. Extremely rare and seldom published, the originals can be seen in the Hildesheim museum and as you can see, they are brimming with intrinsic if somewhat comical detail.
Created very late in the reign of Amenhotep III as can be determined by his extremely youthful features typical of statues created after his revivifying Heb-Sed festival.
Perhaps this statue was made for the ensuing festival as the ancient owner would have held them in the highest regard like that of an actual deity.
A lot of work goes into making the smaller pieces such as this and often they are more difficult to make than comparatively larger works.
