Ushabti / Shabti
Dimensions :-
Total height - 16cm / 6 inches approx.
Base square - 3 cm / 1-1/8 inch
Available here is a replica ushabti figure dug out of the Down under Pharaoh archive from 2012. It has subtle details and an aged blue colour and is mounted on a felt based stand. A tall, slender and elegant form, this is a type that dates from the 26th dynasty. I made many of these shabti types for the final Night at the museum film production and I think I might make some others from that era return for a new generation to appreciate.
Historical background :-
The name stems from the Sha-wab tree, as early figures were made from its wood. Later figures employed a great variety of materials such as clay, faience{opaque blue green glass} plaster and stone depending on what you could afford. These figures were placed within the tomb of an individual to magically come to life performing any work required by the god Osiris in the afterlife. A modest burial would have one or two figures, however during the late period the quantities included within a burial increased to allow a shabti for each day of the year plus overseers. Some burials had even more.
