Width - 4.4 cm / 1-3/4 inches
Depth - 6.8 cm / 2-1/2 inches
On offer here is a rare replica of a 12th century chess piece. Chess statuettes from this early period of chess culture are rare in any case, but this one is an unusual and intricate example.
The subject of the sculpture represents the Queen within a castle, or in this case 'castille' would be more appropriate, for this is a Spanish fortification heavily influenced by Moorish architecture. Further evidence of the Spanish flavour can be determined by the head garment of the Queen and the arches of the castille. The headband and hood typical of the types worn by royal women of the medieval period.
Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone, the piece has an aged ochre patina.
