Wadjet

Dimensions of double cobra amulet :-
Length - 7 cm / 2-3/4 inches
Height - 5 cm / 2 inches
Depth - 3 cm / 1-1/2 inches

On offer here are a pair of ancient Egyptian artifact replicas featuring the cobra goddess Wadjet.
A rare double cobra amulet that is mounted on a polished, felt based stand and a sculptors trial model relief carving make for a terrific display option. Seeing the cobra in 2 and 3 dimensional forms together creates contrast and interest for the viewer.
The amuletic statuette has a linear pattern on the body and more details engraved into the snake's two hooded heads.

Dimensions of relief fragment :-
Height - 12.5 cm / 4-3/4 inches

Width - 10 cm / 4 inches

Depth - 2 cm / 3/4 inch

The raised relief carving replica is finely carved and is regarded as a sculptors model. It could also be employed as a votive talisman.

That it can be identified as a sculptor's model can be determined in the upper most hood segment. One half of the hood is finely carved with tiny texture details while the other side remains blank. This was to show the apprentice sculptor the effective use of extra details to enhance the carving.
The rest of the carving is carefully modeled showing the contours of the snake's body resting on a basket..

Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone both pieces have an aged patina.

Background information

Wadjet was the cobra goddess of lower, northern Egypt. She was the patron deity of the delta city known as 'Buto' and could also be known by this name in the late period.

The cobra was the protector of Kings and Queens and is the symbol that rests on the brow of every king, poised to spit venom at the enemy of Egypt.

In earliest history when the Egyptians looked up at the sprawling star clustered arm of the milky way, they associated it with Wadjet as a heavenly representation.

Hathor also had an association with the milky way as the 'star spangled cow' in mythological teachings.
