Background information - The god Amun was the principal god of the Egyptian New Kingdom whose centre of worship was in the south at Thebes, also known as ancient 'Waset' which was the capital city during the majority of the prestigious 18th dynasty.

Known as 'the hidden one', Amuns' temple enclosure at Karnak is the largest surviving temple in Egypt today and one of the largest religious precints in the world.

The principal god of the northern Memphite region (near modern day Cairo) was Ra the sun god. The main god of the south during the emergence of theTheban kings was Amun. The north and south from earliest times saw conflict, disunity and unification in a cyclic trend. North - South rivalry was something the new kingdom kings wanted to avoid as they were well aware of Egypts' already thousand year old culture. They chose to retain a united country and incorporated Ra of the north into the iconography of the state god. Thus became known to all as Amun Ra - lord of the two lands. Many kings had the name Amun incorporated in their name. The Amunhoteps, Amenemhats and of course the well known Tutankhamun.

In this statue Amun's wife Mut is seated beside him and she was one of many whose attributes and titles included that of 'mother goddess'. Their son was Khonshu, the god of the moon and his presence completed what is known as the 'Theban triad'. Most Egyptian towns and cities had their own families of gods and Thebes was no different with temples dedicated to each one, present in the temple precinct of Karnak.

Mut wears a composite crown including the vulture crown which was her signature head piece if she wore nothing else. She also wears the double crown of upper and lower Egypt on top of the vulture crown.

Amun wears the upper Egyptian crown , also known as he red crown, surmounted by two tall ostrich feathers that have been highly stylized. He wears a 'rishi' corset that features fine feather patterns and a standard male kilt. Rishi feather patterns became widely used during the `18th and 19th dynasty being incorporated into coffin decorations as well as statues of reigning monarchs wearing feathered tunics. The throne is decorated with bunches of lotus flowers and hieroglyphs also add their particular aesthetic value as well as being documentation of a religious prayer.
