Stand width - 4.8 cm / 1-7/8 inches
On offer here is a rare replica of the so called 'Hell plaque' which is actually a Sumerian and Babylonian protection device to heal and protect from sickness.
It was designed to hang above the bed where the inflicted lay and prevent the forces of evil personified by Lamashtu from taking hold.
Lamashtu can be seen as the largest figure in the lower center of the front panel. She holds two snakes and suckles two lion cubs while standing on a donkey riding in a boat. Chaos.
The upper register shows the great gods of the pantheon that have been evoked to preside over the exorcism of the forces of Lamashtu. Shamash the sun god, the crescent moon of Sin, the lightning bolt of the god of storms, Adad and the supreme god Ashur.
In the second register a parade of different deities with animal heads offer beneficial help to the inflicted mortal resting on a bed. He is being tended to by two priests wearing fish skins which is a sign of the association with the god Ea and great wisdom.
Peering over the whole scene is the 3 dimensional form of Pazuzu the notorious demon god of Mesopotamia. His hands can be seen gripping the top of the panel as he snarls with mouth open. The rear view shows his body in shallow raised relief.
His presence is not to create further havoc but to encourage his wild consort Lamashtu to leave the mortal alone.
