Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone, it has been given a well developed aged green patina and is mounted upon a handmade removable felt based stand.
This beautiful replica fragment features the impressive Saite period style of Egyptian sculpture which aimed for crisp and fine details and an almost sensuous modelling of the human form.
The hair is smooth and very tactile, the hieroglyphs seen on the back view are neat and spaced in a way very typical of the era. The text begins to tell the titles and genealogy of Ankh-khonshu who lived in the early years of dynasty 26 under the rule of Psamtik 1st.
It has a pleasing jagged underside where it came away from it's base in ancient times. A dent can be seen on the head that can determine where it hit the ground or more likely the stone temple floor. Thankfully the nose did not get damaged as is so often the case with ancient statues.
A fortunate discovery in the Cairo museum has identified the body that matches the distinctive jagged break of the head. This find allows for a greater understanding of the art as it was conceived and it was indeed a block statue with very fine feet protruding from the cloak he wore. Hopefully the two pieces may be joined together again one day.
