The subject of Mary and Joseph with their baby Jesus fleeing the wrath of King Herod is depicted in this detailed fragment. After the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, Mary and Joseph were visited by the ‘Magi’ who informed them of imminent danger to all infants in the area thus prompting the ‘flight’ into a safer Egypt.

This scene shows mother Mary astride a donkey holding Jesus, led by Joseph. Stylized shields form the lower register as a symbol of a protected journey.
