Offering bearer

5th dynasty relief carving

Dimensions :-

Height - 34.5 cm / 13-1/2 inches

Width - 17.5 cm / 6-3/4 inches

On offer here is a fine replica of a 5th dynasty offering bearer holding one Egypt's sacred animals, the goose.

Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone, this particularly realistic looking piece has remnant paintwork that once would have enhanced the original carving. A small wire loop on the back allows for a wall display option.

Background information

This scene is just one portion of a larger composition that features a procession of offering bearers heading towards the inner sanctum of a tomb. The tomb in question was originally built and decorated for a certain Neferirtenes who lived during the 5th dynasty of the old kingdom. (2446-2389 B.C.E)

The tomb was usurped by prince Raemkai with no alterations to the abundant scenes before the start of the reign of Isesi( 2381 B.C.E) .

Traces of the original owners name survived to allow the full interpretation of this fascinating tomb. One whole chamber of this tomb was relocated to the Metropolitan museum in New York where it remains one of the most popular attractions.

The quality of the relief carving is fine bas relief whereby the background is laboriously chiseled away leaving the design raised above the surface. Typically old kingdom relief is not as deeply cut as later eras. The deeper the cut, either raised or sunken relief, the more difficult it is to usurp.
