Background information.

Tutu

This fine statue replica of the Egyptian god Tutu shows the facial characteristics of the early Ptolemaic period 300-150 B.C.E. A simplicity of form contrasts sharply with later depictions of this popular god who would often sport wings and more elaborate head gear.

Only the signature ‘serpent as tail’ and the soft modelling of the striding lion’s body hint at the nature of the god’s mythological role.

He was a protector of dreams. A demon slayer and master of spirits who could be called upon to invoke a peaceful sleep and a peaceful waking life. In some respects similar to the domestic god Bes of which he kept company. Tutu’s larger size, claws and handy venomous serpentine tail were his unique arsenal in demonic combat.

His representations on stelae, wall reliefs and paintings are of a god shown in profile but sometimes with the head facing outwards towards the viewer. This was significant because it showed he was approachable and he was certainly embraced by an Egyptian population.

He rose to prominence quite late in Egyptian mythological history, with the first known evidence of his name inscribed around 600 B.C.E.

Son of the goddess Neith, this statue would most likely have been a votive temple donation at her temple in the Nile delta city of Sais.
