Tutankhamun Statue fragment
Dimensions :-
Total height - 14 cm / 5-1/2 inches
Base square - 3.8 cm / 1-1/2 inches
Available here is a rare replica of an original fragment from the reign of Tutankhamun. This fine piece is made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone with an aged light ochre patina. It is mounted on a polished felt based stand with the head positioned at a slightly upward angle for dramatic, and engaging effect.
Background information
This small fragment holds enough information to date from the very early years of Tutankhamun's reign as it still employs the sfamato effect of softened features and smooth, undelineated eyes used to great effect in the preceding reign of Akhenaten and Smenkhare.
It has similar technique that can be seen in some of Akhenaten's surviving Ushabti figure fragments that were created not long before, perhaps by the very same relocated artists that worked in this style at Amarna.
The face has the unmistakable features of the boy king which is quite astonishing in it's consistency of style. Each king had a 'state' style and Tut's almost cherub features are repeated again and again as his face now enhanced the many replacement statues that were removed or destroyed in the reign of Akhenaten.
This statue fragment was possibly part of a small sphinx that was used in temple rituals as opposed to a publicly seen artwork.
