Available here is a very fine hand painted replica of the goddess Isis / Aset with protective unfurled wings. It is the first public release of this carving which I completed over 10 years ago. Shelved and forgotten in the dark recesses of the old archive, it took me to move to a new home and studio to find it again. One of the most powerful and enduring goddesses from the Egyptian pantheon, she certainly waited patiently for her time in the sun.
Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone, this signed 2021 piece has been designed for wall mounting using a small hook or angled nail as it has a carefully drilled hole in the back.
Background information
Isis / Aset - an ancient goddess of mothers and powerful magic.
Her influence was felt across the Mediterranean and she was worshipped well into Roman times.
Her temple on the Island of Philae in the south of Egypt was the last bastion of Egyptian religious culture when the coming wave of Christianity closed the temple doors for the last time. Sadly this was where the very last hieroglyphs were written before the ancient written language died out.
In this alluring representation Isis wears her original ‘throne’ headdress as well as a red headband and an elaborate collar. Isis could also be shown wearing the solar disc and cow horn crown borrowed from the goddess Hathor whom she shared many characteristics with.
She kneels on the ‘Nebu’ symbol for gold which was considered divine and the very flesh of the gods.
Subtle colours of the Egyptian palette enhance the image of this beautiful and determined looking goddess.
A hieroglyphic text reinforces a spell of protection for the boy king Tutankhamun whose names and titles can be seen encircled by cartouches.
