On offer here is a stunning replica in miniature, of a scene from the Parthenon. The scene shown is but one section of the 115 blocks that were composed for the famed Parthenon frieze. The frieze encircled the main temple as a decorative band of raised relief carving describing the great Panathenaia festival held in honour of the goddess Athena.
* A replica collector card from the early 20th century is included with the carving that further demonstrates the atmosphere of this ancient special event.
The details of the replica carving are exquisite and represent the procession of bulls involved in the Hecatomb - the sacrifice of 100 bulls during the course of the festival.
Such bovine carnage was necessary to feed the masses during the biggest festival in the city of Athens, celebrated every 4 years during the months of July and August in ancient times.
