Available here is another absolute rarity of Mesopotamian statuary. Known as 'The god with the golden hand' the original statue that this replica is based upon was found in the ancient ruins of the city of Susa.

Made during the second millennium B.C.E the statue was once fully coated in gold but today, only the hand retains a portion of the precious metal. In this replica I have used 24 karat gold leaf to emulate the original figure.

On stylistic grounds, the features follow traditional Sumerian examples of deity statues with horned headdress and the fleecy long garment known as a kaunakes.
The complete lack of inscription does not indicate the name of the god but it was found within the temple complex of Inshushinak with a cache of other associated items with inscriptions relating to the god.

Inshushniak was known as the lord of Susa even though the name is of Sumerian origin suggesting religious cross pollination. His original role was the patron protector deity of the city but as the importance and influence of Susa grew, so did the powers of the god to become a national deity. In addition to his now universal protector role, he presided over oaths and the judgement of the dead.

Other details that speak visually to communicate the local Susanian style of the statue are the rigid pose, the distinctive smile and the beard details. The top half of the beard is smooth while the lower portion is segmented to denote curls.
Also the horns sit on a wide brimmed hat that was unique to the region.

A very special statue.
