Cylinder seal impressions
On offer here are a pair of rare seal impression replicas of Assyrian and Sumerian design. Made of limestone and quartzite composition stone, they have aged patinas.
Assyrian
Height - 3cm / 1-1/4 inches
Width - 5.8 cm / 2-1/4 inches
Featuring an astronomical motif dominated by the planet Venus - known to the Assyrians as the star of Ishtar. The presence of other star arrangements behind the seated figure and the crescent moon behind the standing figures, were a way of dating the seal which was a document of a transaction. An early depiction of the winged sun disc can also be seen floating above the scene.
Sumerian
Height - 3.3 cm / 1-1/4 inches
Width - 6.8 cm / 2-3/4 inches
This seal is a typical example of the type created in the third dynasty of Ur. A worshipper is lead by an interceding goddess to an enthroned Ur Nammu followed by a cuneiform inspcription that denotes the owner of the seal as a trader.
Ur Nammu was the founder of the 3rd Sumerian dynasty and instigated a renaissance in art, building projects and the introduction of a legal code that still echoes into the modern age. All of this took place in southern Mesopotamia between 2047 & 2030 B.C.E
